Wildlife
-
The Ouse system: the Ouse system and the Washes contain some of Europe's most precious wetlands and the wildlife is extremely diverse and abundant. The boat effectively acts as a mobile hide with birds and other wildlife perceiving it as part of the environment.
-
Ornithology: birds are everywhere on the river. Herons and kingfishers will be spotted on most trips along with other common water fowl (moorhens, grebes, coots and a variety of ducks and geese). Many birds of prey hunt along the river; kestrels, sparrow hawks, barn owls are all common sightings along with rarer species on occasion such as short eared owls and harriers. Seasonal migrants include fieldfare, oyster catchers, little grebes and arctic terns.
-
Other wildlife: water voles can occasionally be sighted as can mink, deer and grass snakes. Otters are present throughout the system but are rarely sighted - but you may be lucky! Grey seals are a common sight on some stretches.
